GLASS FUSION
These were someone's earrings and my necklace sitting ready to go into the kiln
The finished product.
So this week I ventured into the world of Fusion Glass jewelery. My neighbor Loretta (who also talked me into quilting) talked me into going with her to this class. You start by taking a square piece of glass, drawing a shape onto it with a pattern, then you gradually cut away the edges with a glass cutter. When you are about 1/8 " from the edge of your pattern you take it to the grinder and grind the edges away so all you have left is your shape. You do this with one piece of coloured glass and one piece of clear glass. Then you take what they call "Diachronic" glass which has all kinds of neat opalescent colours to it, cut little pieces and make a design which you glue onto your coloured piece of glass. Once these are in place you add glue all around the edges to completely cover the remaining glass and sprinkle what is call "Frit" or ground up glass, which kind of looks like course salt. You shake off the excess and then glue the clear piece on top. It all goes into the Kiln for several hours at a very high temperature and what comes out is a very pretty piece of Fused Glass jewelery.
I will definitely be doing this again.............very fun!
